Burge and Kirchen to conduct free Guitar-Songwriter Workshop

Todd Burge and Bill Kirchen have joined forces for a May tour and, while in Marietta, will offer a free workshop for guitarists and songwriters on May 4 2013, at 12 Noon, on the stage of the Peoples Bank Theatre, formerly the Colony, 222 Putnam Street, Marietta, Ohio. This is possibly the last use of the stage before the final phase of renovation begins.

This is the eighth year that Burge has collaborated with the Hippodrome/Colony Historical Theatre Association and the Ohio Arts Council to present a workshop for area musicians and songwriters. This is a rare opportunity to interact with two singer-songwriter-guitarists of the caliber of Bill Kirchen and Todd Burge.

Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step onto any stage, play those trademark licks that drove his seminal Commander Cody classic Hot Rod Lincoln into the Top Ten, and elicit instant recognition. Kirchen’s career that has spanned over 40 years and includes guitar work with Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Doug Sahm, Elvis Costello and many more. Named “A Titan of the Telecaster” by Guitar Player Magazine, he celebrates an American musical tradition where rock 'n' roll and country music draws upon its origins in blues and bluegrass, Western swing from Texas and California honky-tonk. His current CD Word to the Wise on Proper American features duets with many of these artists he's worked with, including Costello, Lowe, Maria Muldaur and Dan Hicks.

Over the last two decades, Todd Burge, has played everything from Alternative Rock to Bluegrass, performing over 100 shows per year in venues as diverse as CBGB’s, The Country Music Hall of Fame and the Kennedy Center.  Burge is a repeat guest on Public Radio’s Mountain Stage and has been called the “dean of WV songwriters, the best we have”, by the show’s host, Larry Groce.  Burge has performed and toured with Tim O’Brien, Kathy Mattea, Lucinda Williams, Bela Fleck, Mike Seeger, Larry Groce, Ricky Skaggs and many others.

While the workshop is free, pre-registration is requested. Call the theatre office at 740-373-0894 or email: becky@colonytheatre.com.

The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
